About Nutrition International and its efforts to reduce anaemia

The consequences of anaemia impact the health, well-being, and human capital of the most vulnerable nations globally, disproportionately affecting children, adolescent girls, and women of reproductive age. Investing in proven interventions to address anaemia is highly cost-effective. Nutrition International believes that reducing anaemia will improve the lives of millions worldwide and help children reach their full potential. Therefore, the organization strongly believes that now is the time to act and enhance efforts to reduce anaemia. Nutrition International joined the Anaemia Actions Alliance because the organization is convinced that combating anaemia requires strong leadership and collective action. Additionally, building long-term relationships with international organizations is one of Nutrition International’s key strategies to influence and translate global guidance and policies into impactful country actions. The organization strongly believes that addressing persistent public health problems, such as anaemia, requires the collaborative efforts of multisector organizations. Nutrition International has strong technical and research capabilities that can be leveraged by the Alliance to achieve its goals.

How our organization is tackling anaemia?

Nutrition International's long-standing trajectory has encompassed all action areas, with a particular emphasis on supporting the implementation of low-cost, high-impact evidence-based interventions that address anaemia. The organization also focuses on increasing the availability, quality, and access to technical guidance and tools for planning and programming in a prioritized, multi-sectoral way, addressing the right drivers of anaemia in each context.

The organization's current, strengthened approach to addressing anaemia focuses on all action areas by advocating for and supporting the development and implementation of costed anaemia action plans. This involves supporting the government’s understanding of the anaemia landscape using available data, selecting interventions that meet countries’ needs and address the causes of anemia, and strengthening delivery platforms.

Their Research and Development Unit translates evidence into actionable prioritized agendas and helps improve local capacity to address evidence and implementation research challenges. Alongside the Advocacy team, this information is used to advocate for increased investments in anaemia reduction efforts and to promote government ownership of anaemia programs.

What our organization can offer?

Through a holistic approach, Nutrition International supports the delivery of low-cost, high-impact evidence-based interventions to address anaemia, such as iron and folic acid supplementation and when warranted, multiple micronutrient supplements for pregnant women, weekly iron and folic acid supplementation for adolescents and large-scale food fortification. Simultaneously, our Research and Development Unit generates high-quality evidence to inform both global and country-level policies and interventions for anaemia. We also strengthen the evidence base for developing new products, such as double-fortified salt with iodine and folic acid, digital technologies, decision-making tools and innovative solutions to address needs identified while delivering programs and interventions. By working as an ally to national and regional governments, we translate evidence into actionable knowledge to support decision-making, advocate for making anaemia a priority and push for increased investment in anaemia reduction efforts.
Our specialty:
Nutrition International works with governments, global and regional institutions, and local civil society organizations to create impact-driven partnerships to solve complex nutrition and health challenges. This connected approach helps the organization ensure that no opportunity is missed when it comes to breaking down barriers between different sectors and successfully integrating nutrition into non-nutrition platforms.
