About the Clinical Trials Unit at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

With over 20 years of experience, the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) has an international reputation for conducting clinical trials in a wide range of areas, including maternal health and postpartum haemorrhage.

CTU trials have made significant contributions to advancing health research and improving patient outcomes. Our trials generate invaluable data and conclusive results that help to enhance safety protocols, change routine practices and identify new or improved therapy options.

By joining the Anaemia Action Alliance, we are collaborating with other organisations and institutions working on anaemia, to share evidence and work across disciplines to make a difference to global health, as well as raise awareness of an issue that often goes ignored.

How our organization is tackling anaemia?

Our trial data highlight the hugely negative impact that moderate and severe anaemia have on pregnant women and their babies.

To effectively reduce maternal mortality, we must shift our focus toward the early prevention, detection, and treatment of anaemia in women and girls at a much earlier age.

To achieve this, our expertise aligns with the Alliance workstreams:

  • Integrated research agenda: Developing evidence-based solutions to enhance global health outcomes.

  • Programmatic implementation: Executing coordinated actions to ensure interventions reach those most in need.

What our organization can offer?

We deliver trials of drugs, complex interventions, studies to understand the mechanisms of disease and treatments, cohort studies and systematic reviews of evidence.

We continually examine how we design and deliver trials, including participant recruitment and retention strategies, to optimise effectiveness and efficiency.

As well as running our own trials, we offer support and advice to colleagues and external parties planning a trial through our  trial adoption process

Our specialty:

Many of our trials are published in leading medical journals and presented at prestigious global conferences, opening important dialogue between researchers, clinicians and decision makers. By sharing our findings with the global community, we help drive advocacy for change and support the continuous evolution of healthcare practices.
